What is Fertility       Acupuncture?

Acupuncture, which originated in China over 2000 years ago is part of a medical system called Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) which stems from ancient philosophy offering an integrated approach to healthcare. It combines the health of mind and body. Acupuncture's holistic approach treats the whole person,  addressing the multiple determinants of health, in order to prevent and cure disease. 
 
Acupuncture today in China is a mainstay of healthcare in doctors' surgeries and hospitals. In Western cultures, acupuncture is used as a stand alone therapy and as an adjunct to conventional medicine. The NHS utilises acupuncture and many IVF clinics recommend acupuncture to prepare the body for embryo transfer. 
 

How does fertility acupuncture work?

Clinical trials show that acupuncture calms the central nervous system, regulates hormones and releases endorphins to initiate the body's healing processes.    

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, our health depends on the uninterrupted flow of Qi or vital energy. An obstructed flow through the fertility channels and organs can cause blockages in the fallopian tubes or uterus which prevent embryo fertilisation or implantation, cause heavy and painful periods (endometriosis) or disrupt the hormonal mechanisms causing ovulation disorders (PCOS).  Acupuncture can help re-establish the flow of ‘qi’ and blood to remove blockages, re-balance the hormones, regulate ovulation and reduce stress. 

Acupuncture also strengthens the secondary fertility organs of the body, such as the Kidney. The Kidney energy is very important for female fertility as a strong kidney prevents miscarriages, enables high quality eggs and embryos and enables optimum conditions in the uterus for implantation.

Acupuncture for fertility also focuses on the emotional journey. Each organ in Chinese Medicine is related to a certain emotion. When the organ is out of balance, this can cause, stress, anxiety, fear, anger or frustration. We work to heal the organ and heal the emotions resulting in higher rates of pregnancy. Acupuncture is a relaxing treatment and in itself, reduces stress and calms the body, promoting good sleep and endorphins.
